Dr. Barbara Berkman to Receive Donald P. Kent Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Berkman will receive the Donald P. Kent Award from the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) for her leadership in research, teaching, service and the translation of her research into practice. She is the second social worker to receive this honor.

An article co-authored by professor Jane Waldfogel, associate professor Neeraj Kaushal, and alumna Qin Gao (‘05PhD) of the Columbia University School of Social Work has been selected as one of the twenty best articles of 2008 in the annual Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research competition.

Fred Ssewamala to Design Pilot Program for Child Development Accounts in Nigeria
Dr. Ssewamala will be collaborating with the Bayelsa State government of Nigeria to design and implement a pilot program for child development accounts (CDAs).  The program, which is facilitated by the World Bank, would be the first of its kind in Nigeria and at the state level in Africa.

Elizabeth Lyons, a second year student at the Columbia University School of Social Work, was awarded with the PACE essay scholarship by the National Association of Social Workers-New York City chapter (NASW-NYC).

Dr. Alfred J. Kahn, A Giant in Comparative International Social Welfare, Dies
Alfred J. Kahn, Professor Emeritus at the Columbia University School ofSocial Work and world-renowned social policy scholar and educator. Dr. Kahn passed away on the morning of February 13, 2009. He was 90 years of age.
